Scope note: Isla situada al sur de Australia y el estado más pequeño de la Commonwealth (Mancomunidad de Naciones). Su capital es Hobart. Fue descubierta en 1642 por un navegante holandés, Abel Tasman, y denominada Islas de Van Diemen, en honor del gobernador general de las colonias de las Indias Orientales Holandesas. En 1853 cambió su denominación en honor a su descubridor en 1853. En 1803 pasó a Gran Bretaña que la utilizó como colonia penal. Adquirió un gobierno propio en 1856 y pasó a ser estado federado en 1901.
