Scope note: Orden de mamíferos completamente acuáticos que se encuentran en todos los océanos y mares adyacentes del mundo, así como en ciertos sistemas fluviales. Algunos cetáceos son los únicos animales aparte de los elefantes que tienen un cerebro mayor que el del hombre. La mayoría tienen ojos bien adaptados para la visión submarina y pueden ver también bien por encima del agua. Producen numerosos sonidos submarinos empleados para la ecolocalización. Se alimentan generalmente de peces, cefalópodos y crustáceos. La mayoría son gregarios y la mayoría tienen un período relativamente prolongado de cuidado y maduración por los padres.
