Scope note: La mayor familia de serpientes que comprende cinco subfamilias: Colubrinae, Natricinae, Homalopsinae, Lycodontinae, y Xenodontinae. Muestran una gran diversidad de hábitos alimentarios, algunos comen de casi todo y otros tienen una alimentación especializada. Pueden ser ovíparos, ovovivíparos o vivíparos. La mayoría de las serpientes de América del Norte son colubrinas. Entre los colúbridos se halla la serpiente rey, mocasines de agua, serpientes de agua y serpientes garter.
