Scope note: Género de plantas de la familia Paeoniaceae, orden Dilleniales, subclase Dilleniidae, clase Magnoliopsida. Estas hierbas perennes llegan a alcanzar una altura de 2 m. Las hojas son alternantes, divididas en tres lóbulos, cada uno de los cuales, a su vez, están divididos en tres lobulillos. Sus grandes flores son simétricas, bisexuales, con 5 sépalos, 5 pétalos (en ocasiones 10) y multitud de estambres.
