En algunas especies sus miembros son virtualmente todos hembras, dependiendo de la esperma de otras especies para estimular el desarrollo de los huevos. La Poecilia se utiliza en estudios de carcinogenicidad, así como en investigaciones neurológicas y fisiológicas.
