Scope note: Familia de plantas del orden Magnoliales, subclase Magnoliidae, clase Magnoliopsida. Su madera carece de células conductoras de agua, pero tiene una savia acre. Las hojas son coriáceas, con bordes lisos, y están salpicadas de glándulas. Las flores, que se presentan en racimos, son pequeñas, con dos a seis sépalos, pétalos en dos o más series, varios estambres y uno o varios carpelos.
