Scope note: Familia de virus ARN que infectan de modo natural a los roedores y que consta de un género (ARENAVIRUS) con dos grupos: Arenavirus del Viejo Mundo (ARENAVIRUS DEL VIEJO MUNDO)y Arenavirus del Nuevo Mundo (ARENAVIRUS DEL NUEVO MUNDO). La infección en los roedores es persistente y silente. La transmisión vertical es vehiculada por la leche, saliva u orina. Es importante la transmisión horizontal a humanos, monos y otros animales.
