Scope note: Agente tripanocida y posible agente antiviral, muy utilizado en biología celular y bioquímica experimental. El etidio tiene diiversas propiedades experimentalmente útiles, entre las que se incluyen la unión a ácidos nucleicos, la inhibición no competitiva de los receptores nicotínicos de la acetilcolina y la fluorescencia. Su bromuro es la forma más utilizada.
