Se ha utilizado también la denominación más laxamente para incluir a los polisacáridos que se dan de modo natural y a los sintéticos muy sulfatados de estructura similar. Se han utilizado los preparados heparinoides en una amplia gama de aplicaciones entre ellas como son anticoagulantes y antiinflamatorios. Se asevera que tiene propiedades hipolipemiantes.
