Scope note: Fibras nerviosas prolongación de las neuronas que conducen los inpulsos procedentes del cuerpo celular. En la arborización terminal del axón se transmiten los impulsos hacia otras células nerviosas o hacia los órganos efectores. En el sistema nervioso periférico, los axones más grandes están rodeados por una vaina de mielina (mielinizados) formada por capas concéntricas de la membrana plasmática de la célula de Schwann. En el sistema nervioso central, la función de las células de Schwann la realizan los oligodendrocitos (OLIGODENDROGLIA). (Dorland, 27th ed.)
