Scope note: Órgano urinario par en forma de habichuela, que se encuentra en la parte dorsal del abdomen, a cada lado de la columna vertebral, entre la 12a vértebra dorsal y la 3a lumbar. Cada riñón mide aproximadamente 11 cm de largo por 6 de ancho y 2,5 de grosor. Los riñones producen y eliminan orina a través de un complejo sistema reticular de filtrado y reabsorción, que consta de más de 2 millones de nefronas, compuestas por glomérulos y túbulos renales, que filtran la sangre a alta presión, extraen urea, sales y otros desechos solubles del plasma sanguíneo y devuelven el filtrado purificado a la sangre.
