La uva de Oregón se descubrió en América del Norte y fue clasificada por Pursh como una BERBERIS, aunque Nuttall mantenía que esta planta es lo suficientemente diferente como para asignársele un nuevo género, MAHONIA. Actualmente, los botánicos insisten en la denominación Berberis, aunque los horticultores mantienen el género. De estas plantas se obtiene la BERBERINA.
