Scope note: Familia del orden DIPTERA a la que pertenecen los mosquitos. El estadio de larva es acuático y los adultos pueden reconocerse por las nervaduras características de las ALAS, las escamas a lo largo de las venas de las alas y la larga probóscide. Muchas especies tienen especial importancia médica.
