Scope note: Reacción inflamatoria que afecta a los pliegues de la piel que rodean las uñas de los dedos. Se caracteriza por inflamación aguda o crónica purulenta, molesta y dolorosa de los tejidos que rodean las uñas, producida por un abceso del pliegue ungueal. La levadura patógena que con mayor frecuencia causa la paroniquia es Candida albicans. Los hongos saprofitos también pueden producirla. Las bacterias causales suelen ser Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa o Streptococcus. (Andrews Diseases of the Skin, 8th ed, p. 271)

It is characterized by acute or chronic purulent, tender, and painful swellings of the tissues around the nail, caused by an abscess of the nail fold. The pathogenic yeast causing paronychia is most frequently Candida albicans. Saprophytic fungi may also be involved. The causative bacteria are usually Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or Streptococcus. (Andrews' Diseases of the Skin, 8th ed, p271)
