Scope note: Familia de plantas del orden Liliales, subclase Liliidae, clase Liliopsida (monocotiledóneas). La mayoría de las especies son perennes, procedentes preferentemente de regiones tropicales de América. Poseen rizomas rastreros, raíces fibrosas y hojas agrupadas en su base o en los puntos de nacimiento de las ramas. El fruto es una cápsula que contiene múltiples semillas o una sola semilla de estructura alar.
