Scope note: República de las Antillas Mayores en las Indias Occidentales. Su capital es Puerto Príncipe. Junto con la Repúblico Dominicana constituyen la isla La Española - Haití ocupa el tercio occidental de la isla mientras que la Republica Dominicana ocupa los dos tercios orientales. Haití perteneció a Francia desde 1697 hasta que su gobierno hubo de enfrentarse a insurrecciones de esclavos a partir del año 1791. Se constituyó en república en 1820. Entre los años 1915 y 1934 fue virtualmente un protectorado americano. Adoptó su constitución actual en 1964, la cual fue modificada en 1971. Su nombre puede derivar de una de dos palabras caribeñas: haití, tierra montañosa; o jhaití, nido.
