Scope note: Neuropéptido multifuncional que actúa en todo el organismo elevando el nivel de AMP cíclico intracelular mediante su interacción con los RECEPTORES DEL PACAP y con los RECEPTORES DEL PÉPTIDO INTESTINAL VASOACTIVO. Aunque se aisló por primera vez a partir de extractos hipotalámicos y se denominó por su acción sobre la hipófisis, tiene una amplia distribución por los sistemas nerviosos central y periférico. El PACAP es importante en el control de procesos endocrinos y homeostáticos, como la secreción de hormonas hipofisarias e intestinales y la ingesta de alimentos.

Although first isolated from hypothalamic extracts and named for its action on the pituitary, it is widely distributed in the central and peripheral nervous systems.
