Scope note: Plantas de la clase Filicinae, que carecen de semillas y flores. Se reproducen por esporas, que aparecen como puntos en el envés de las plumosas frondas. En clasificaciones anteriores, las Pteridofitas comprendían los licopodios, las corregüelas hembras, los helechos y diversos grupos fósiles. En clasificaciones más recientes, las pteridofitas y las espermatofitas (plantas con semillas) están clasificadas en el subreino Tracheobionta (también denominado Tracheophyta).
