Scope note:	Familia de virus ARN que infecta a aves y mamíferos y que codifica la enzima retrotranscriptasa. La familia contiene siete géneros: DELTARETROVIRUS, LENTIVIRUS, RETROVIRUS DE TIPO B DE MAMÍFEROS, ALPHARETROVIRUS, GAMMARETROVIRUS, RETROVIRUS DE TIPO D y SPUMAVIRUS. Una característica fundamental de la biología de los retrovirus es la síntesis de una copia de ADN del genoma que se integra en el ADN celular. En ocasiones, después de la integración no se expresa, pero se mantiene en estado latente (PROVIRUS).

Scope note:

Family of RNA viruses that infects birds and mammals and encodes the enzyme reverse transcriptase. The family contains seven genera: DELTARETROVIRUS; LENTIVIRUS; RETROVIRUSES TYPE B, MAMMALIAN; ALPHARETROVIRUS; GAMMARETROVIRUS; RETROVIRUSES TYPE D; and SPUMAVIRUS. A key feature of retrovirus biology is the synthesis of a DNA copy of the genome which is integrated into cellular DNA. After integration it is sometimes not expressed but maintained in a latent state (PROVIRUSES).
