Scope note:	Compuestos polifenólicos con pesos moleculares de 500-3.000 Da que contienen suficientes grupos hidroxilo (1-2 por 100 MW) para poder establecer un eficaz enlace cruzado con otros compuestos (ASTRINGENTES). Los dos tipos principales son los TANINOS HIDROLIZABLES y los TANINOS CONDENSADOS. Históricamente, el término se ha aplicado a muchos compuestos y extractos de plantas capaces de hacer que el COLÁGENO cutáneo no sufra degradación. El término "tanino" deriva de la palabra celta para ROBLE, que se utiliza en el tratamiento del cuero.

Scope note:

Polyphenolic compounds with molecular weights of around 500-3000 daltons and containing enough hydroxyl groups (1-2 per 100 MW) for effective cross linking of other compounds (ASTRINGENTS). The two main types are HYDROLYZABLE TANNINS and CONDENSED TANNINS. Historically, the term has applied to many compounds and plant extracts able to render skin COLLAGEN impervious to degradation. The word tannin derives from the Celtic word for OAK TREE which was used for leather processing.
