Scope note: Porción del espectro electromagnético inmediatamente debajo del rango visible, que se extiende hasta las frecuencias de los rayos X. Las longitudes de onda más largas (cercanas a las UV o rayos bióticos o vitales) son necesarias para la síntesis endógena de vitamina D, por lo que también se denominan rayos antirraquíticos. Las longitudes de onda más cortas, ionizantes (UV lejanas, rayos abióticos o extravitales) son viricidas, bactericidas, mutágenas y cancerígenas, y se utilizan como desinfectantes.

Scope note: That portion of the electromagnetic spectrum immediately below the visible range and extending into the x-ray frequencies. The longer wavelengths (near-UV or biotic or vital rays) are necessary for the endogenous synthesis of vitamin D and are also called antirachitic rays; the shorter, ionizing wavelengths (far-UV or abiotic or extravital rays) are viricidal, bactericidal, mutagenic, and carcinogenic and are used as disinfectants.
