Scope note: Conjunto de tres nucleótidos de una secuencia de codificación de proteínas que especifica un aminoácido o una señal de terminación (CODÓN DE TERMINACIÓN) determinados. La mayoría de los codones son universales, pero algunos organismos no producen los ARN de transferencia complementarios a todos los codones. Estos codones se conocen como codones sin asignar (CODONES DE TERMINACIÓN).
