Descriptor English: Pili, Sex
Descriptor Spanish: Pili Sexual
Descriptor pili sexual
Entry term(s) pelo sexual
pili de conjugación
Scope note: Estructuras proteicas filamentosas o alargadas que se extienden desde la superficie celular de las bacterias gram-negativas que contienen ciertos tipos de plásmidos conjugados. Estos pelos son los órganos asociados con la transferencia genética y desempeñan un papel esencial en la conjugación. Normalmente, sólo uno o unos pocos de ellos se presentan en una célula donante determinada. (Singleton & Sainsbury, Dictionary of Microbiology and Molecular Biology, 2da ed, p 675). Es preferible utilizar el término "pili" cuando se refiere al apéndice sexual, y así distinguirlo de la fimbria de las bacterias (FIMBRIAS BACTERIANAS), a las que también se les denomina pelos comunes, las cuales están generalmente relacionadas con la adhesión.

Scope note: Filamentous or elongated proteinaceous structures which extend from the cell surface in gram-negative bacteria that contain certain types of conjugative plasmid. These pili are the organs associated with genetic transfer and have essential roles in conjugation. Normally, only one or a few pili occur on a given donor cell. (From Singleton & Sainsbury, Dictionary of Microbiology and Molecular Biology, 2d ed, p675) This preferred use of "pili" refers to the sexual appendage, to be distinguished from bacterial fimbriae (FIMBRIAE, BACTERIAL), also known as common pili, which are usually concerned with adhesion.
