Scope note: Proteínas cromosómicas pequeñas (aproximadamente 12-20 kD) que poseen una estructura abierta, no plegada y unidas al ADN en los núcleos celulares por enlaces iónicos. La clasificación en diversos tipos (denominadas histona I, histona II, etc) se basa en las cantidades relativas de arginina y de lisina en cada una de ellas.
