Scope note: Glomerulonefritis crónica que se caracteriza histológicamente por proliferación de las células mesangiales, aumento de la matriz mesangial y engrosamiento de las paredes de los capilares del glomérulo. Se dice en ocasiones que el engrosamiento de las paredes es consecuencia de la interposición de citoplasma mesangial o de la matriz entre la membrana basal y el endotelio de la pared capilar. Con frecuencia se divide en los tipos I y II, y algunas veces III. La patogenia no se conoce bien, pero se piensa que en algunos tipos interviene el sistema inmunitario, y en particular se ha implicado al sistema del complemento.

Scope note: Chronic glomerulonephritis characterized histologically by proliferation of MESANGIAL CELLS, increase in the MESANGIAL EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX, and a thickening of the glomerular capillary walls. This may appear as a primary disorder or secondary to other diseases including infections and autoimmune disease SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS. Various subtypes are classified by their abnormal ultrastructures and immune deposits. Hypocomplementemia is a characteristic feature of all types of MPGN.
