Scope note: Sistemas en los que se genera una señal intracelular como respuesta a un primer mensajero intercelular, como una hormona o un neurotransmisor. Son señales intermedias en procesos celulares como el metabolismo, la secreción, la contracción, la fototransducción y el crecimiento celular. Ejemplos de sistemas de segundos mensajeros son el sistema de la adenil ciclasa-AMP cíclico, el sistema del fosfatidilinositol difosfato-inositol trifosfato y el sistema del GMP cíclico.

Scope note: Systems in which an intracellular signal is generated in response to an intercellular primary messenger such as a hormone or neurotransmitter. They are intermediate signals in cellular processes such as metabolism, secretion, contraction, phototransduction, and cell growth. Examples of second messenger systems are the adenyl cyclase-cyclic AMP system, the phosphatidylinositol diphosphate-inositol triphosphate system, and the cyclic GMP system.
