Scope note: Síndrome producido por un grave déficit proteico, caracterizado por retraso del crecimiento, alteraciones pigmentarias de la piel y el pelo, edema y alteraciones anatomopatológicas hepáticas, tales como infiltración grasa, necrosis y fibrosis. La denominación de este síndrome deriva de un término local de Ghana, en África, que significa "niño desplazado". Aunque el primer caso se describió en África, el kwashiorkor actualmente se conoce en todo el mundo, pero principalmente en los países tropicales y subtropicales.
