Scope note: Células multinucleadas producidas por la fusión de muchas células que frecuentemente se asocian con las infecciones víricas. En el SIDA son inducidas cuando la glucoproteína de cubierta del virus HIV se une al antígeno CD4 de las células T4 vecinas no infectadas. El sincitio resultante da lugar a la muerte celular y por tanto puede explicar el efecto citopático del virus.

Scope note: Multinucleated masses produced by the fusion of many cells; often associated with viral infections. In AIDS, they are induced when the envelope glycoprotein of the HIV virus binds to the CD4 antigen of uninfected neighboring T4 cells. The resulting syncytium leads to cell death and thus may account for the cytopathic effect of the virus.
