Pueden ser vegetales (fitobentos) o animales (zoobentos); macroscópicos (megalobentos, macrobentos), de tamaño medio (meiobentos) o microscópicos (microbentos). El bentos es particularmente importante en las productivas aguas costeras, donde el fitobentos recibe suficiente luz para desarrollarse y alimentar densas poblaciones de zoobentos.
