Scope note: Enfermedad infecciosa muy contagiosa causada por el virus varicela-zóster (HERPESVIRUS 3 HUMANO). Suele afectar a niños y se disemina por contacto directo o por vía respiratoria a través de gotitas. Se caracteriza por la aparición en piel y mucosas de brotes sucesivos de lesiones vesiculosas pruriginosas características que se rompen, formándose con facilidad una costra. La enfermedad suele ser benigna en niños, pero puede complicarse con neumonía y encefalitis en los adultos. (Dorland, 27th ed)
