Scope note: Células no neuronales del sistema nervioso. Se divide en macroglía (ASTROCITOS, OLIGODENDROGLÍA y CÉLULAS DE SCHWANN) y MICROGLÍA. No sólo ofrece soporte físico, sino también responde a las lesiones, regula la composición iónica y química del medio extracelular, participa en la BARRERA HEMATOENCEFÁLICA y en la BARRERA HEMATORRETINIANA, forma la cubierta de mielina de las vías nerviosas, guía la migración neuronal durante el desarrollo e intercambia metabolitos con las neuronas. La neuroglía tiene sistemas de captación de transmisores de alta afinidad, canales iónicos dependientes del voltaje y del transmisor de acceso, y pueden liberar transmisores, pero su papel en la señalización (como en muchas otras funciones) no está clara.

Scope note: The non-neuronal cells of the nervous system. They not only provide physical support, but also respond to injury, regulate the ionic and chemical composition of the extracellular milieu, participate in the BLOOD-BRAIN BARRIER and BLOOD-RETINAL BARRIER, form the myelin insulation of nervous pathways, guide neuronal migration during development, and exchange metabolites with neurons. Neuroglia have high-affinity transmitter uptake systems, voltage-dependent and transmitter-gated ion channels, and can release transmitters, but their role in signaling (as in many other functions) is unclear.
