Scope note:	Las mayores y más numerosas células neurogliales del cerebro y de la médula espinal (macroglía). Los astrocitos (proviene de células "estelares") son de forma irregular con muchas y largas prolongaciones, incluidas aquellas que con "pies terminales" forman la membrana glial (limitante) y contribuyen directa e indirectamente con la BARRERA HEMATOENCEFÁLICA. Ellas regulan el ambiente extracelular iónico y químico, y los "astrocitos reactivos" (conjuntamente con la MICROGLÍA) responden a las lesiones.

Scope note:

A class of large neuroglial (macroglial) cells in the central nervous system - the largest and most numerous neuroglial cells in the brain and spinal cord. Astrocytes (from "star" cells) are irregularly shaped with many long processes, including those with "end feet" which form the glial (limiting) membrane and directly and indirectly contribute to the BLOOD-BRAIN BARRIER. They regulate the extracellular ionic and chemical environment, and "reactive astrocytes" (along with MICROGLIA) respond to injury.
