Principal proteína estructural que tapiza las VESÍCULAS CUBIERTAS que desempeñan un papel clave en el transporte intracelular entre los organelos membranosos. Cada molécula de clatrina consta de tres cadenas ligeras (CADENAS LIGERAS DE CLATRINA) y tres cadenas pesadas (CADENAS PESADAS DE CLATRINA) que forman una estructura llamada triscele. La clatrina también interactúa con las proteínas citoesqueléticas.

Scope note:

The main structural coat protein of COATED VESICLES which play a key role in the intracellular transport between membranous organelles. Each molecule of clathrin consists of three light chains (CLATHRIN LIGHT CHAINS) and three heavy chains (CLATHRIN HEAVY CHAINS) that form a structure called a triskelion. Clathrin also interacts with cytoskeletal proteins.
