Scope note: Proteínas filamentosas intermedias de tipo III que se encuentra en los neurofilamentos, que constituyen el principal elemento citoesquelético de los axones y las dendritas. Está constituida por tres polipéptidos diferentes, el triplete de neurofilamentos. Los tipos I, II y IV de las proteínas filamentosas intermedias forman otros elementos del citoesqueleto, como las queratinas y las laminas. Parece que el metabolismo de los neurofilamentos se altera en la enfermedad de Alzheimer, tal como indica la presencia de neurofilamentos epítopos en los haces neurofibrilares, así como la intensa reducción de la expresión del gen de la subunidad ligera del neurofilamento del triplete de neurofilamentos que se observa en los pacientes con enfermedad de Alzheimer. Scope note: Type III intermediate filament proteins that assemble into neurofilaments, the major cytoskeletal element in nerve axons and dendrites. They consist of three distinct polypeptides, the neurofilament triplet. Types I, II, and IV intermediate filament proteins form other cytoskeletal elements such as keratins and lamins. It appears that the metabolism of neurofilaments is disturbed in Alzheimer's disease, as indicated by the presence of neurofilament epitopes in the neurofibrillary tangles, as well as by the severe reduction of the expression of the gene for the light neurofilament subunit of the neurofilament triplet in brains of Alzheimer's patients.
