No tienen una vaina firme individual, pero a menudo presentan una cubierta blanda. Se conocen muchas especies en todo el mundo como componentes principales del PLANCTON de agua dulce, así como de muchos lagos salados. La especie DOLICHOSPERMUM FLOS-AQUAE es responsable de intoxicaciones agudas en diversos animales.
