Scope note: Intercambio recíproco de segmentos en posiciones correspondientes de pares de CROMOSOMAS homólogos por rotura simétrica y reagrupamiento cruzado formando sitios de entrecruzamiento (UNIONES HOLLIDAY) que se resuelven durante la SEGREGACIÓN CROMOSÓMICA. El entrecruzamiento ocurre típicamente durante la MEIOSIS pero también puede ocurrir en ausencia de meiosis, por ejemplo, con los cromosomas bacterianos, genes de los orgánulos o en los cromosomas nucleares de células somáticas.

Scope note: The reciprocal exchange of segments at corresponding positions along pairs of homologous CHROMOSOMES by symmetrical breakage and crosswise rejoining forming cross-over sites (HOLLIDAY JUNCTIONS) that are resolved during CHROMOSOME SEGREGATION. Crossing-over typically occurs during MEIOSIS but it may also occur in the absence of meiosis, for example, with bacterial chromosomes, organelle chromosomes, or somatic cell nuclear chromosomes.
Annotation: do not confuse with CROSSES, GENETIC, the result of breeding 2 varieties of the same species
