Scope note: Capa fina, dura y translúcida formada por una sustancia calcificada que envuelve y protege a la dentina de la corona de los dientes. Es la sustancia más dura del cuerpo y está compuesta casi totalmente por sales de calcio. Bajo el microscopio, está integrada por varillas finas (prismas de esmalte) que se mantienen juntas gracias a una sustancia cementante, y cubierta por una vaina de esmalte.
