Scope note: A superorder of New World mammals characterized by the absence of incisors and canines from among their teeth, and comprising the ARMADILLOS and the SLOTHS. The superorder is distinguished from all others by what are known as xenarthrous vertebrae (xenos, strange; arthron, joint): there are secondary, and sometimes even more, articulations between the vertebrae of the lumbar series. Scope note Superorden de mamíferos del Nuevo Mundo caracterizados por la ausencia de incisivos y caninos en sus dientes, y que comprenden a los ARMADILLOS y los PEREZOSOS. Este superorden se distingue de los otros, por lo que se conoce como xenarthrous vertebrae (xenos, extraño; arthron, articulación): hay articulaciones secundarias, y en ocasiones aún más entre las vértebras de la serie lumbar.
