Scope note:	Ablandamiento o pérdida de tejido cerebral que se produce después de un INFARTO CEREBRAL, isquemia encefálica (ver ISQUEMIA CEREBRAL), infección, TRAUMATISMO CRANEOENCEFÁLICO, u otra lesión. El término se utiliza a menudo, durante la inspección anatomopatológica macroscópica, para describir los márgenes corticales poco definidos y la disminución de la consistencia del tejido cerebral después de un infarto. La encefalomalacia multiquística hace referencia a la formación de múltiples cavidades quísticas de tamaño variable en la corteza cerebral de los recién nacidos y lactantes después de lesiones producidas fundamentalmente por fenómenos perinatales de hipoxia-isquemia. Scope note:

Softening or loss of brain tissue following CEREBRAL INFARCTION; cerebral ischemia (see BRAIN ISCHEMIA), infection, CRANIOCEREBRAL TRAUMA, or other injury. The term is often used during gross pathologic inspection to describe blurred cortical margins and decreased consistency of brain tissue following infarction. Multicystic encephalomalacia refers to the formation of multiple cystic cavities of various sizes in the cerebral cortex of neonates and infants following injury, most notably perinatal hypoxia-ischemic events.
