Scope note: Procesos por los que los organismos fotótrofos utilizan la luz solar como fuente principal de energía. Contrasta con los procesos quimiótrofos que no dependen de la luz y obtienen la energía de fuentes químicas exógenas. La fotoautotrofia (o fotolitotrofia) es la capacidad de utilizar la luz solar como energía para fijar los nutrientes inorgánicos que se tienen que utilizar para satisfacer otras necesidades orgánicas. Entre los fotoautótrofos se encuentran las PLANTAS VERDES, las ALGAS VERDES, las CYANOBACTERIAS, las bacterias verdes y las BACTERIAS PÚRPURA SULFUROSAS. Los fotoheterótrofos o fotoorganótrofos requieren un aporte de nutrientes orgánicos para satisfacer sus necesidades orgánicas, pero utilizan la luz solar como fuente principal de energía, como por ejemplo: determinadas BACTERIAS PÚRPURA NO SULFUROSAS. Dependiendo de las condiciones ambientales, algunos organismos pueden alternar entre diferentes modos nutricionales (AUTOTROFÍA, HETEROTROFÍA, quimiotrofía, fototrofía) para utilizar diferentes fuentes que satisfagas sus necesidades nutricionales y energéticas.

Photoautotrophy (or photolithotrophy) is the ability to use sunlight as energy to fix inorganic nutrients to be used for other organic requirements. Photoautotrophs include all GREEN PLANTS; GREEN ALGAE; CYANOBACTERIA; and green and PURPLE SULFUR BACTERIA. Photoheterotrophs or photoorganotrophs require a supply of organic nutrients for their organic requirements but use sunlight as their primary energy source; examples include certain PURPLE NONSULFUR BACTERIA. Depending on environmental conditions some organisms can switch between different nutritional modes (AUTOTROPHY; HETEROTROPHY; chemotrophy; or phototrophy) to utilize different sources to meet their nutrients and energy requirements.
