Se localiza en la membrana y el espacio intermembranoso mitocondrial y se transloca al citoplasma en respuesta a estímulos de la APOPTOSIS como la irradiación UV; promueve la muerte celular por unión e inhibición de las PROTEÍNAS INHIBIDORAS DE LA APOPTOSIS, lo que da lugar a un incremento de la actividad de las CASPASAS. Las mutaciones del gen HTRA2 se asocian a algunas formas de la ENFERMEDAD DE PARKINSON (PARK13).

It localizes to the mitochondrial membrane and intermembrane space, translocating to the cytoplasm following APOPTOSIS stimuli, such as UV irradiation; it promotes cell death by binding to and inhibiting INHIBITOR OF APOPTOSIS PROTEINS, resulting in an increase in activity of CASPASES. Mutations in the HTRA2 gene are associated with Type 13 PARKINSON DISEASE.
