Scope note: Precursor prohormonal peptídico de la CALCITONINA. Normalmente está presente en concentraciones bajas en el suero, pero se libera al torrente circulatorio, principalmente por células neuroendocrinas en los pulmones y el intestino, en respuesta a la INFLAMACIÓN y a las INFECCIONES BACTERIANAS. Es un marcador diagnóstico de BACTERIEMIA.

Scope note: A peptide prohormone precursor of CALCITONIN. It is normally present at low levels in serum, but is released into the bloodstream, primarily from neuroendocrine cells in the lungs and intestines, in response to INFLAMMATION and BACTERIAL INFECTIONS. It is a diagnostic marker for BACTEREMIA.
