Fue descubierta por los portugueses en 1500 y su historia se ha relacionado principalmente con los franceses; en 1882 se convirtió en protectorado francés y en 1896 en colonia francesa y territorio dentro de la unión francesa en 1946. La república de Malagasia quedó establecida en la Comunidad Francesa en 1958 pero consiguió su independencia en 1960. El nombre fue cambiado a Madagascar en 1975.
