Tiene acciones y empleos similalres a los de la MORFINA.Tiene también una acción antidepresiva sobre el centro de la tos y puede administrarse para el control de la tos intratable asociada a cáncer de pulmón terminal. También se utiliza la metadona como parte del tratamiento de dependencia de los opioides, aunque el empleo prolongado de la propia metadona puede dar lugar a dependencia.
