Doctrina metafísica que establece que las funciones y procesos de la vida se deben a un principio vital diferente de las fuerzas fisicoquímicas, y que las leyes de la física o de la química, por sí mismas, no pueden explicar los procesos y funciones vitales. El vitalismo se opone al materialismo mecanicista. La creencia era que, sobre la base de su comportamiento respecto del calor, la materia estaba dividida en dos clases: orgánica e inorgánica. La materia inorgánica podría fundirse pero siempre sería posible recuperarla eliminando la fuente de calor. Los compuestos orgánicos sometidos al calor cambiarían su forma y al eliminar este no se podrían recuperar. La explicación propuesta para la diferencia entre los compuestos orgánicos e inorgánicos fue la teoría vitalista, que postulaba que los compuestos inorgánicos carecen de "fuerza vital".

The metaphysical doctrine that the functions and processes of life are due to a vital principle distinct from physicochemical forces and that the laws of physics and chemistry alone cannot explain life functions and processes. Vitalism is opposed to mechanistic materialism. The belief was that matter was divided into two classes based on behavior with respect to heat: organic and inorganic. Inorganic material could be melted but could always be recovered by removing the heat source. Organic compounds changed form upon heating and could not be recovered by removing the heat source. The proposed explanation for the difference between organic and inorganic compounds was the Vitalism Theory, which stated that inorganic materials did not contain the "vital force" of life.
