Note d'application: Recuento de poblaciones que, por regla general, registra las identidades de todas las personas en cada lugar de residencia, con la edad o fecha de nacimiento, sexo, profesión, nación de origen, idioma, estado civil, renta, relación con el cabeza de familia, información sobre el lugar de residencia, educación, alfabetización, datos sobre el estado de salud (p. ej. incapacidad permanente), etc. El censo o "enumeración de las personas" se menciona en diversas ocasiones en el Antiguo Testamento. Entre los romanos, los censos estaban íntimamente relacionados con el recuento de las tropas antes y después de la batalla y probablemente eran una necesidad militar.
