Fueron reclamadas por vez primera por los franceses en 1744 pero tomadas por los ingleses en 1794 y hechas dependientes de MAURICIO en 1810. Se convirtieron en colonia de la corona en 1903 y en república de la Commonwealth en 1976. Fueron nombradas en honor del ministro de finanzas de Francia, Jean Moreau de Sechelles, pero los ingleses cambiaron la ortografía en 1794.
