Nota de escopo: Estado independiente, es un archipiélago en el Golfo Pérsico occidental, al noroeste de Catar. Comprende las islas bajas de Baréin (la mayor), Muharraq, Sitrah, y otros islotes. Tiene extensos campos petroleros. El nombre proviene del árabe al-bahrayn, "los dos mares", debido a que yace en medio de una bahía con sus "dos mares" al este y al oeste de ellas.
