Nota de escopo: Grupo de islas de la Polinesia, en el norte del océano Pacífico central, que comprende ocho islas mayores y 114 menores, en su mayoría volcánicas y coralinas. Su capital es Honolulú. Primero fueron habitadas por los polinesios, alrededor del 500 A.D. Fueron descubiertas por el Capitán Cook en 1778 quien les dio el nombre de Islas Sandwich. Las islas fueron unidas bajo el gobierno del Rey Kamehameha entre 1795-1819 y solicitaron la anexión a los Estados Unidos en 1893, cuando se estableció un gobierno provisional. Hawaii fue definido como un territorio en 1900 y admitido como estado en 1959. El nombre proviene del vocablo polinesio Owhyhii, lugar de los dioses, en referencia a los dos volcanes, Mauna Kea y Mauna Loa, considerados como la morada de los dioses (Traducción libre del original: Webster's New Geographical Dictionary, 1988, p493 & Room, Brewer's Dictionary of Names, 1992, p2330).
