Nota de escopo: Nombre común para el filo microscópico unicelular STRAMENOPILES. La mayoría son acuáticas y se encuentran en aguas dulces, salobres y saladas. Las diatomeas se caracterizan por la simetría y forma escultural de sus paredes celulares silíceas. Representan el 40 por ciento del FITOPLANCTON pero no todas las diatomeas son planctónicas.
